The word “retain” shows up in all kinds of everyday situations. We talk about retaining information for a test, retaining composure in stressful moments, or retaining control when things feel uncertain. Even skin care products promise to help your skin retain moisture. In each case, “retain” means to hold onto something important, and that’s exactly what implant retained dentures do. These aren’t your typical loose, uncomfortable dentures. Instead, dental implants retain, or hold, the denture in place so you never have to worry about unintended movement. This added stability helps you maintain comfort and confidence in your daily activities.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are small titanium posts that we place into your jaw to support your denture. For implant retained dentures, our doctors often use mini dental implants. These are much slimmer than traditional implants and made from a single piece, with a rounded top called an O-ball. That small tip is what the denture connects to.

Because mini implants are so narrow, placing them is simpler, gentler, and quicker than traditional methods. The minimally invasive procedure gets you back to your routine faster, and with a more stable denture than ever before.

How Do Dental Implants Retain Dentures?

We call them implant retained dentures, but you might know them as snap-in dentures. It’s a fitting nickname! These dentures look similar to traditional ones, but they snap onto mini implants instead of resting on your gums. Since the implants provide retention, the denture doesn’t need to be as bulky or rely on suction or adhesives. Many patients find that an implant retained denture feels a lot more natural and comfortable.

The underside of the denture includes small attachments called housings. Inside each housing is a rubber O-ring, which grips the O-ball at the top of each mini dental implant. When you press the denture into place, the O-rings snap over the O-balls, creating a secure yet flexible connection. This snap-on mechanism helps the denture stay firmly in place during daily activities while still being easy to remove for cleaning.

Some people choose implant retained dentures for their upper teeth, others for their lower, and some for both arches. For lower dentures, we typically place 4 to 6 mini implants. For upper dentures, we usually place 6 to 8. The upper jawbone is less dense than the lower jaw, so we use more implants to ensure proper stability.

Can My Current Denture Be Converted Into an Implant Retained Denture?

In some cases, we can convert an existing denture into a snap-in denture. It’s a quick, convenient, and affordable way to get a more secure fit without starting from scratch. But here’s the catch: your denture has to be in good shape and have enough space underneath for us to add the implant housings.

Not every denture is a good candidate. Since traditional dentures aren’t made with dental implants in mind, there may not be enough space to accommodate the housings. We’ll need to examine the fit, structure, and overall wear of your current denture to determine if we can adapt it. If it isn’t suitable, we can design a new one that works properly with dental implants!

The Benefits of Implant Retained Dentures

Implant-retained dentures provide meaningful improvements in comfort, function, and long-term oral health. Here’s what they can offer you:

  • Stay securely in place: The denture snaps onto implants, so it won’t shift while you eat, speak, cough, smile, or laugh.
  • Improve comfort: By eliminating bulky materials and messy adhesives, implant retained dentures give you a more natural, irritation-free fit.
  • Restore chewing ability: Implant dentures give you a much stronger bite force than traditional dentures. This renewed strength allows you to eat all your favorite foods with confidence.
  • Preserve jawbone health: Dental implants stimulate your jawbone when you bite and chew, which prevents bone loss.
  • Restore peace of mind: With a secure, natural-feeling fit, you can go about your day without worrying about your denture slipping or causing embarrassment.
